A breath of fresh air. Very continental, old-school production, but well done and unpretentious. Classic French Theater, Ballet (a dance historian seated next to me agreed that the dance was well done but pointed out that the arabesques were historically incorrect: “ Those were Balanchine arabesques, too open for that time!”) and comedia dell’arte. A bit busy at times but all in all not too distracting. Anna Netrebko as Adriana wonderfully poised, rich dark voice, high level of refinement in her interpretation. Piotr Bezcala a dream, an ideal partner for Netrebko, very precise in voice and physical projection, a highly intelligent performer. Anna Rachvelishvili as La Princesse de Bouillon: earth shattering pipes and an imposing physique that could bulldoze anyone in her way. Ambrosio Maestri as Michonnet deeply moving. Can’t wait to see his Falstaff.
It felt good to be there. Opera Classique.
